The University at Albany, part of the State University of New York system, is situated on a 586-acre campus in the state capital of Albany, approximately 150 miles north of New York City. The institution's main campus, constructed in the 1960s, features distinctive modernist architecture designed by Edward Durell Stone, characterized by its towering columns and grand entry plaza. Originally founded in 1844 as a normal school for teacher training, UAlbany has evolved into a comprehensive public research university offering undergraduate and graduate programs across nine academic colleges. The university maintains strong academic programs in criminal justice, public affairs, atmospheric sciences, and business, with particularly notable research centers focused on nanoscale science and engineering. Most first-year students reside in the university's quad-style residence halls, with the campus community spanning between the main uptown campus and the downtown campus in Albany's center.
