Stony Brook University, located on Long Island's North Shore approximately 60 miles east of New York City, is a public research institution and member of the State University of New York (SUNY) system. The 1,039-acre suburban campus features a mix of modern and brutalist architecture, with the main academic buildings centered around a pedestrian-focused academic mall. Established in 1957 and relocated to its current location in 1962, Stony Brook has evolved into a selective research university particularly known for its programs in mathematics, physics, engineering, and health sciences, including its affiliated medical center and teaching hospital. The university maintains partnerships with several nearby research facilities, including Brookhaven National Laboratory, and offers on-campus housing to undergraduate students in multiple residential quadrangles.
