Stony Brook University, located on Long Island's North Shore approximately 60 miles east of New York City, is a public research institution and member of the State University of New York (SUNY) system. The 1,039-acre suburban campus features a mix of modern and brutalist architecture, with the main academic buildings centered around a pedestrian-focused academic mall. Established in 1957 and relocated to its current location in 1962, Stony Brook has evolved into a selective research university particularly known for its programs in mathematics, physics, engineering, and health sciences, including its affiliated medical center and teaching hospital.
