The University of Rhode Island (URI), established in 1892 as an agricultural school and now the state's flagship public research university, is situated in the quaint town of Kingston, Rhode Island, approximately 30 miles southwest of Providence. URI offers a campus noted for its rural setting and historic structures, with a variety of architectural styles including late Victorian era buildings. The university maintains a broad academic profile with a noteworthy College of Environmental and Life Sciences and a strong College of Nursing. It is characterized by a selective admissions process. Student housing is provided through a range of on-campus residences, accommodating a significant proportion of the student body. Popular majors among the diverse array of programs offered include Business, Engineering, and Health Professions. URI's athletic teams, known as the Rams, have garnered recognition in sports such as basketball and soccer.
