The University of Delaware's main campus is located in Newark, Delaware, approximately 40 miles southwest of Philadelphia. Established in 1743, it holds the distinction of being one of the oldest universities in the United States and was originally founded as a private academy before becoming a land-grant institution. The 2,000-acre suburban campus features Georgian-style architecture and includes the Science, Technology and Advanced Research (STAR) Campus, a research and innovation hub on the grounds of a former Chrysler assembly plant. Known for its programs in chemical engineering, physical therapy, and public policy, the university maintains strong connections with research institutions and industry partners throughout the Delaware Valley. Students primarily live on campus during their first two years in traditional residence halls or special interest housing communities, with many upperclassmen residing in nearby off-campus apartments.
