The University of New Hampshire's main campus is located in Durham, a small town approximately one hour north of Boston and minutes from the Atlantic coast. Established in 1866 as a land-grant institution, UNH's campus combines traditional New England architectural elements with modern academic facilities spread across 2,600 acres. As the state's flagship public university, UNH operates as a selective institution offering more than 200 degree programs through its major colleges, with particular strengths in engineering, marine sciences, and sustainability studies. The campus features extensive research facilities, including a NASA-recognized Space Science Center and a marine laboratory on the nearby Seacoast, while most first-year students reside in one of the university's residential halls. The UNH Wildcats compete in NCAA Division I athletics as members of the America East Conference, with ice hockey participating in Hockey East.
