SUNY Buffalo State is located in Buffalo's Elmwood Village district, positioned three miles from downtown Buffalo and adjacent to the city's cultural corridor. The 125-acre urban campus combines modern academic facilities with several historic buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places, including Rockwell Hall, which features distinctive 1930s Art Deco architecture. Founded in 1871 as a teacher's college, Buffalo State has evolved into a comprehensive public institution offering bachelor's and master's degrees across four academic schools, with particular strengths in education, art and design, and criminal justice. The college maintains an urban-engaged mission, with significant emphasis on experiential learning and community partnerships through the Professional Development Schools Consortium. Students can choose from traditional residence halls or apartment-style housing, with approximately one-third of undergraduates living on campus.
