SUNY New Paltz occupies a 257-acre campus in the Hudson Valley region, situated 90 minutes north of New York City and nestled at the base of the Shawangunk Mountains. The public liberal arts college, established in 1828 as a teachers' school, operates in a small college town setting that combines historic stone houses with contemporary academic buildings. SUNY New Paltz maintains competitive admission standards among SUNY institutions and offers comprehensive programs in business, education, fine arts, and liberal arts and sciences, with particularly strong offerings in engineering and visual arts. The campus features traditional residence halls housing approximately half of its undergraduate population, and the college competes in NCAA Division III athletics as the Hawks.
