Eastern Michigan University occupies a 800-acre campus in Ypsilanti, Michigan, located 35 miles west of Detroit and 7 miles east of Ann Arbor. Founded in 1849 as Michigan State Normal School, it was the first teachers' training school established west of the Alleghenies and has evolved into a comprehensive public university, with its historic central campus characterized by red-brick buildings and the landmark EMU water tower. The university maintains a moderate admissions policy and offers more than 200 undergraduate majors and graduate programs, with particularly strong offerings in education, business, nursing, and psychology. The campus features traditional residence halls housing first-year students, while upperclassmen have access to apartment-style living options, and the Eagles compete in NCAA Division I athletics as members of the Mid-American Conference.
