Eastern Michigan University occupies a 800-acre campus in Ypsilanti, Michigan, located 35 miles west of Detroit and 7 miles east of Ann Arbor. Founded in 1849 as Michigan State Normal School, it was the first teachers' training school established west of the Alleghenies and has evolved into a comprehensive public university, with its historic central campus characterized by red-brick buildings and the landmark EMU water tower. The university maintains a moderate admissions policy and offers more than 200 undergraduate majors and graduate programs, with particularly strong offerings in education, business, nursing, and psychology.
