Established in 1865 as part of the Morrill Act, the University of Maine is a public institution located in Orono, Maine, approximately 8 miles from Bangor, one of the state?s major urban centers. The university sits on a scenic 660-acre campus, characterized by a mix of classic and contemporary architecture surrounded by the North Maine Woods, lending it both a rich academic atmosphere and a connection to the natural environment.
