Clark Atlanta University, located in Atlanta's historic West End district, is a private historically Black university formed in 1988 by the consolidation of Clark College (founded 1869) and Atlanta University (founded 1865). The 126-acre urban campus sits within the Atlanta University Center Consortium, the largest contiguous consortium of African American private institutions of higher education in the United States. The university maintains a selective admission process and offers undergraduate and graduate programs with particular strengths in business, mass media arts, and STEM fields. CAU, as it's commonly known, requires undergraduate students to live on campus for their first two years and competes in NCAA Division II athletics as the Panthers, particularly known for its basketball program.
