The United States Air Force Academy (USAFA), located in Colorado Springs, Colorado, is a military academy for officer cadets of the United States Air Force and Space Force. Established in 1954, the campus is recognized for its distinctive modernist architecture, most notably the iconic Cadet Chapel. The Academy sits on an 18,000-acre campus and adopts a rigorous academic program emphasizing science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines, alongside programs in the humanities and social sciences. Cadet life includes a comprehensive military training component, with mandatory participation in various physical activities. Admission to USAFA is highly competitive, focusing on a mix of academic excellence, leadership potential, athletic capabilities, and character assessment. All admitted students are provided with on-campus housing in one of several cadet dormitories. While the Academy is a breeding ground for future Air and Space Force leaders and does not necessarily tout athletic programs as its primary focus, their intercollegiate sports teams, known as the Falcons, compete in the NCAA Division I as members of the Mountain West Conference.
