The United States Coast Guard Academy, established in 1876, occupies a 103-acre campus along the Thames River in New London, Connecticut, approximately two hours from both New York City and Boston. As one of the five U.S. service academies, the institution provides a highly selective undergraduate education focused on developing military officers for the Coast Guard, combining rigorous academic programs with military training and leadership development. The academy offers eight engineering and professional majors, with particular emphasis on marine and civil engineering, naval architecture, and government studies. Cadets receive full scholarships and live in military-style housing arrangements within Chase Hall, following a regimented daily schedule that includes academic classes, military duties, and athletic requirements. The Division III athletic program competes in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference, with the sailing team maintaining a particularly strong reputation in intercollegiate competition.
