Tuskegee University, located in Tuskegee, Alabama, is a private, historically Black university that occupies a campus remarkable for its designation as a National Historic Site. Tuskegee's history is integral to its identity, founded by Lewis Adams and Booker T. Washington in 1881. Approximately 40 miles east of Montgomery, the university is set in a rural environment contributing to a focused educational atmosphere.
