Located in Tuskegee, Alabama, approximately 40 miles east of Montgomery, Tuskegee University is a private historically Black university established in 1881 by Booker T. Washington. The 5,000-acre campus features notable Victorian and Colonial Revival architecture, with several buildings designed by Robert R. Taylor, the first accredited African American architect in the United States. The university maintains a selective admissions process and is recognized for its engineering and aerospace programs, being the top producer of African American aerospace science engineers in the nation. Tuskegee's College of Veterinary Medicine is the only one at a historically Black college and has graduated more than 70 percent of the nation's Black veterinarians. Students reside in traditional residence halls on the historic main campus, which is designated as a National Historic Site by the National Park Service.
