Alcorn State University, located in rural southwestern Mississippi approximately 40 miles north of Natchez, is a public historically Black land-grant institution established in 1871. The 1,700-acre campus features a mix of historic and modern buildings set among rolling hills and wooded areas. As the nation's first state-supported institution for the higher education of African Americans, Alcorn State maintains comprehensive academic programs with particular strengths in agriculture, biological sciences, and business. The university operates as a primarily residential campus with multiple student housing options, and competes in NCAA Division I athletics as the Braves in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC). Agricultural research facilities and demonstration farms are integrated throughout the campus, supporting the university's land-grant mission and agricultural programs.
