Virginia Union University occupies a historic campus in Richmond, Virginia's North Side, approximately two miles from the downtown area. Established in 1865 to educate freed slaves, the institution operates as a private, historically Black university affiliated with the American Baptist Churches USA. The campus features distinctive Gothic Revival architecture, including several buildings constructed of Virginia granite that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The university offers undergraduate and graduate programs with particular strengths in theology, education, and business administration through its four academic schools. Students primarily reside in one of six on-campus residence halls, and the university competes in NCAA Division II athletics as the Panthers, participating in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association.
