Founded in 1872 as a land-grant institution, Virginia Tech (formally known as Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University) is a public research university situated in Blacksburg, Virginia. Set against the backdrop of the Blue Ridge Mountains, the university boasts a sprawling 2,600-acre campus noted for its Hokie Stone architecture, a distinctive limestone rock native to the region and central to the visual identity of the campus. With a comprehensive array of undergraduate and graduate programs, Virginia Tech is particularly recognized for its engineering, business, and agriculture sciences disciplines. The university's application process is moderately selective. Students have access to on-campus housing options, ranging from traditional residence halls to living-learning communities. Known as the Hokies, Virginia Tech's athletic teams compete in the NCAA Division I Atlantic Coast Conference, and the football program is notably prominent.

In the most recent statistical year 45,321 prospective students applied, and 25,825 were granted admission.  Of those admitted 7,166 enrolled in the school.  35,282 students are enrolled on a full time basis, and 2,888 attend part time. In-state tuition for 2022/2023, excluding room and board, is $12,104 plus fees of $2,482.
