The University of Vermont (UVM), established in 1791, occupies a hilltop campus in Burlington overlooking Lake Champlain and the Adirondack Mountains, with downtown Burlington located just east of campus. The 460-acre main campus combines traditional green quadrangles with historic buildings in the Federal and Collegiate Gothic styles, while newer facilities house the medical center and STEM departments. As Vermont's sole land-grant institution, UVM offers comprehensive academic programs through seven undergraduate colleges and schools, with particular strengths in environmental sciences, sustainable agriculture, medical education, and engineering. The university maintains selective admission standards and requires first-year students to live in one of the multiple residential complexes spread throughout campus. UVM competes in NCAA Division I athletics as the Catamounts, with its men's basketball and skiing programs having achieved notable success.
UVM is rated within the top 29% of four-year colleges nationally and earns a CollegeSimply grade of 8 out of 10. Learn how ratings are calculated
