Stephen F. Austin State University, located in the historic East Texas city of Nacogdoches, occupies a 421-acre main campus characterized by pine trees and traditional brick architecture. Established in 1923 as a teachers' college, SFA has evolved into a comprehensive public university offering programs across six academic colleges, with notable strengths in forestry, education, and business. The university maintains its own experimental forest, which serves as a living laboratory for one of the top forestry programs in the South, while also operating the Mast Arboretum and native plant center on its main campus. Situated in Texas's oldest town, the university provides predominantly undergraduate education with on-campus housing requirements for first-year students, and competes in NCAA Division I athletics as the Lumberjacks.
