Marymount Manhattan College occupies several buildings on Manhattan's Upper East Side, situated between East 71st and 72nd Streets near Central Park. Originally founded in 1936 by the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary as a women's college, MMC became independent and coeducational in 1976. The main campus building, Carson Hall, houses academic facilities and student residences in a converted apartment building characteristic of the neighborhood's architecture. The liberal arts college maintains a selective admissions process and is known for its performing arts, dance, theatre, and communications programs, with many students drawn to its proximity to New York City's cultural institutions and entertainment industry. Students can choose to live in one of two college-operated residential buildings in Manhattan, though many also commute from throughout the New York metropolitan area.
