Tougaloo College, located in Tougaloo, Mississippi, is a private historically black liberal arts institution founded in 1869 and affiliated with the United Church of Christ and the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). The college sits on a 500-acre campus marked by notable red-brick buildings and is situated approximately ten miles north of Jackson, offering access to the metropolitan culture and opportunities. Known for its strong emphasis on social justice and civil rights, Tougaloo College provides a range of undergraduate degrees with popular majors in the biological sciences, education, and social sciences. While selectivity for admission is generally considered moderately selective, the college maintains a commitment to a student-centered educational experience. The on-campus living is an integral part of the student experience with residence halls and student housing options. Though not recognized primarily for its athletic programs, the college fields several sports teams known as the Bulldogs.
