Tougaloo College, located in a historic district seven miles north of Jackson, Mississippi, operates as a private liberal arts institution with roots dating back to 1869 when it was established by the American Missionary Association. The 500-acre campus features several structures listed on the National Register of Historic Places, including the Robert O. Wilder Building (formerly the John Boddie Mansion), which served as a station on the Underground Railroad. Known for its significant role in the Civil Rights Movement, Tougaloo maintains strong programs in natural sciences, particularly biology and chemistry, along with social sciences and humanities. The campus provides traditional dormitory housing for its undergraduate population, with most students residing on campus throughout their academic career. While maintaining NCAA Division III provisional membership status, the college competes as the Tougaloo Bulldogs primarily in basketball and tennis.
