Racial Diversity

Racial Diversity Index: 8%

Racial diversity is the chance that two students chosen at random are from different racial or ethnic groups, using the U.S. Census Bureau Diversity Index. Students at Spelman are almost exclusively Black with a small Multiracial population. The school has extremely low racial diversity. 100% percent of students are minorities or people of color (BIPOC). The ethnic breakdown is detailed in the following table.

Spelman College is a Historically Black College and University (HBCU) primarily serving the African-American community.

Gender Diversity

Spelman College is a women's college. There are more female students than male students enrolled at Spelman College with a gender ratio of 95% women to 5% men.  Though it is a women's college, 4.98% of the student body is male. Compared to the US average of 56% female students, Spelman has a lower gender diversity than other US colleges and is less inclusive of males.
