Spelman College, a private historically Black liberal arts college for women, is situated in Atlanta, Georgia, just west of downtown. Founded in 1881, it holds the distinction of being America's oldest private institution of higher education for Black women. Spelman's urban campus exudes a rich historical ambiance, with noteworthy features such as Sisters Chapel and an impressive collection of 19th-century buildings. The college maintains a highly selective admissions process and is well-regarded for academic programs in the arts, social sciences, and STEM fields. Although not primarily recognized for athletics, Spelman participates in the NCAA Division III as a non-competitive member. On-campus living is part of the Spelman experience, with a variety of residence halls fostering an inclusive educational environment.
