Birmingham-Southern College occupies a 192-acre hilltop campus in the western area of Birmingham, Alabama, approximately three miles from downtown. The private liberal arts institution, founded in 1856 through the merger of Southern University and Birmingham College, maintains its historic ties to the United Methodist Church while operating as an independent college. The campus features Georgian Colonial architecture throughout its academic buildings and residential facilities, where most students are required to live on campus for all four years. As a selective liberal arts college, Birmingham-Southern focuses on undergraduate education with notable programs in business, pre-medical studies, and the fine arts, while also offering distinctive January term courses that allow for intensive study and experiential learning. The college competes in NCAA Division III athletics as the Panthers, following its transition from Division I in 2006.
