The Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) occupies multiple historic buildings throughout Savannah's landmark district, with its main campus integrated into Georgia's oldest city. Founded in 1978, SCAD has transformed numerous nineteenth-century structures, including the former Savannah Volunteer Guard Armory, into specialized academic facilities while maintaining their architectural integrity. The college, which focuses exclusively on creative disciplines, offers programs across areas including animation, fashion, architecture, film, and design, with additional specialized facilities in Atlanta, Hong Kong, and Lacoste, France. SCAD provides first-year student housing in several restored buildings throughout the historic district, with upperclassmen typically living in off-campus housing throughout Savannah. Its urban campus setting allows students direct access to Savannah's arts community, with SCAD operating several public galleries and the SCAD Museum of Art in repurposed historic structures.
