The University of Montevallo, Alabama's only public liberal arts university, is situated in a small town 35 miles south of Birmingham. The 160-acre main campus features red-brick Georgian Revival and Colonial Revival architecture and is designated as a National Historic District. Founded in 1896 as the Alabama Girls' Industrial School, the institution became coeducational in 1956 and is now a selective public undergraduate university. While offering comprehensive liberal arts programs, Montevallo is particularly known for its College of Fine Arts, education programs, and communication studies department. Students are required to live on campus for their first two years, with housing available in both historic and modern residence halls, and the university competes in NCAA Division II athletics as the Falcons.
