University of Mary Washington (UMW), located in Fredericksburg, Virginia, is a public liberal arts and sciences university founded in 1908. The institution is situated approximately 50 miles south of Washington, D.C., offering students access to both a quaint, historic city environment and proximity to the nation's capital. The UMW campus is noted for its Jeffersonian architecture, encompassing a blend of traditional and modern buildings that house a diverse range of academic programs. The university fosters academic rigor through a selection of more than 60 majors and programs, with a strong emphasis on undergraduate research and a liberal arts core. Popular majors at UMW include Business Administration, Psychology, and Biological Sciences. While the college has a moderately selective admissions process, it remains accessible to a broad range of students. On-campus living is championed through residence halls and apartments, reinforcing a cohesive living-learning community. University of Mary Washington does not place a central focus on athletics, but it does support a variety of NCAA Division III sports teams, known as the Eagles, for student participation.
