Shenandoah University, located in Winchester, Virginia, is a private institution established in 1875. Situated in the Northern Shenandoah Valley near the West Virginia border, the university is approximately 75 miles from Washington, D.C., providing students with access to the cultural and professional opportunities of a major metropolitan area while enjoying a smaller town setting. The campus features a blend of historic and modern architecture with facilities that support both residential and commuter student populations. Academically, Shenandoah University is known for its programs in the health professions, performing arts, and conservatory. The university is moderately selective in its admissions process. While Shenandoah does not have a widely known athletic program, it supports a range of varsity sports teams nicknamed the Hornets.
