Eastern Mennonite University sits on a 97-acre campus in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, located in the city of Harrisonburg approximately two hours from Washington, D.C. Founded in 1917 as a Mennonite institution, EMU maintains its connection to the Mennonite Church USA while welcoming students of all faiths. The university operates as a private liberal arts institution, offering undergraduate programs with particular strengths in nursing, education, business, and peacebuilding studies, including its notable Center for Justice and Peacebuilding at the graduate level. The campus features a mix of historic and modern buildings, including LEED-certified sustainable structures, and requires most undergraduate students to live on campus in one of six residence halls. EMU competes in NCAA Division III athletics as the Royals, participating in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.
