Eastern Mennonite University (EMU), located in Harrisonburg, Virginia, is a private liberal arts university with an affiliation to the Mennonite Church USA. Established in 1917, the university provides a faith-based environment within a scenic Shenandoah Valley setting, roughly two hours from Washington, D.C. EMU offers undergraduate, graduate, and seminary programs, with a particular emphasis on peace, justice, and cross-cultural understanding. Wide-ranging undergraduate programs highlight disciplines such as nursing, education, and environmental sustainability, with the institution maintaining a reputation for a strong emphasis on community service and social impact. EMU's campus features modest architectural designs with facilities that accommodate on-campus student living. The university is characterized by a more inclusive application process compared to some institutions of higher education. While EMU does maintain athletic programs as a member of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference, it is not predominantly recognized for its athletic accomplishments.
