Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi occupies a unique 240-acre island campus along the Gulf of Mexico, connected to mainland Corpus Christi by a causeway. The waterfront campus, established in 1947 as the University of Corpus Christi and joining the Texas A&M System in 1989, features modern academic buildings and student housing spread across Ward Island. Known as "The Island University," TAMU-CC operates as a Hispanic-Serving Institution offering undergraduate and graduate programs, with particular strengths in marine biology, nursing, business, and environmental science. The university maintains a focus on coastal and marine research through its Harte Research Institute for Gulf of Mexico Studies, while students have access to beach areas and water-based recreational activities as part of campus life. The Division I Islanders compete in the Southland Conference, with basketball and baseball serving as prominent athletic programs.
