Sewanee-The University of the South is a private liberal arts college located atop the Cumberland Plateau in Sewanee, Tennessee, approximately 93 miles southeast of Nashville. Established in 1857 by the Episcopal Church, the University is known for its School of Theology and strong programs in English, History, and Environmental Studies. Sewanee's curriculum emphasizes undergraduate study in the arts, sciences, and humanities, and the institution maintains a selective admissions process. The campus, celebrated for its Gothic Revival architecture, spans 13,000 acres, providing students with extensive natural surroundings and outdoor recreational opportunities. Housing is provided with a majority of students living on-campus across multiple residence halls and themed houses, upholding a residential college experience. Sewanee's varsity sports teams, known as the Tigers, compete in the NCAA Division III, with particular recognition in the domain of equestrian sports.
