Sewanee: The University of the South occupies a 13,000-acre campus atop the Cumberland Plateau in southeastern Tennessee, approximately 90 minutes from both Nashville and Chattanooga. The Gothic-style campus, established in 1857 by Episcopal clergy, features native sandstone buildings and is known for its extensive system of protected forests and natural areas. This private liberal arts institution maintains selective admission standards and follows many traditional Oxford-Cambridge customs, including academic gowns worn by faculty and students who achieve academic distinction. While offering majors across the liberal arts and sciences, Sewanee has particular strength in English literature, environmental studies, and religious studies, supported by its School of Theology graduate program. Students are required to live on campus for all four years in residential colleges and historic dormitories, maintaining the university's emphasis on residential academic community.
