Claflin University, located in Orangeburg, South Carolina, approximately 40 miles southeast of Columbia, is a private historically Black university founded in 1869 by Methodist missionaries. The 46-acre campus features a mix of historic and modern buildings, including the iconic Tingley Memorial Hall, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. As South Carolina's oldest historically Black college, Claflin maintains selective admission standards and offers undergraduate programs with particular strengths in business, communications, education, and STEM fields. The university provides traditional dormitory housing for its primarily residential student population and competes in NCAA Division II athletics as the Panthers.
