Cheyney University of Pennsylvania, located in the rural township of Thornbury, approximately 25 miles west of Philadelphia, is the nation's oldest historically Black institution of higher education, established in 1837 as the Institute for Colored Youth. The 275-acre campus features a mix of historic and modern buildings situated in Pennsylvania's Delaware Valley region. Operating as a public university within the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education, Cheyney maintains selective admission standards and offers undergraduate programs with particular emphasis in natural sciences, business administration, and communications. The university provides traditional dormitory housing for students across several residential halls, and while competing in NCAA Division II athletics as the Wolves, Cheyney focuses primarily on its academic mission and historical significance in African American education.
