Shaw University, located in downtown Raleigh, North Carolina, is a private historically Black university founded in 1865 as the first historically Black institution of higher learning established in the Southern United States. The urban campus spans several blocks in central Raleigh and features a mix of historic and modern buildings, including the landmark Leonard Hall. The university offers undergraduate programs with particular emphasis in business administration, religious studies, and social work, while maintaining its historical connection to the Baptist church. Students are required to live on campus for their first two years, with housing provided in six residence halls that accommodate approximately half of the student population, and the university competes in NCAA Division II athletics as the Shaw Bears.

Shaw University is a Historically Black College and University (HBCU) primarily serving the African-American community.
