Located in the rural village of Alfred in western New York's Southern Tier region, Alfred University operates as a private institution established in 1836. The 232-acre campus features a mix of historic and modern buildings nestled in the Allegany foothills, situated approximately 70 miles south of Rochester. Alfred University is recognized for its College of Ceramics, which houses one of the nation's leading programs in ceramic engineering and art, while also maintaining strong programs in business, education, and liberal arts. The university maintains a selective admission process and provides on-campus housing through traditional residence halls and special-interest housing options. As a member of the Empire 8 Athletic Conference, Alfred fields NCAA Division III teams known as the Saxons.
