New Mexico Highlands University sits in Las Vegas, New Mexico, approximately 65 miles east of Santa Fe in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Established in 1893 as New Mexico Normal School, the institution evolved into a comprehensive public university serving a largely Hispanic student population. The campus features a mix of historic Spanish Renaissance and modern architectural styles, with several buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places. NMHU offers undergraduate and graduate programs with particular strengths in education, social work, business, and natural resources management, while maintaining a focus on serving first-generation college students from northern New Mexico.
