Washington College, located in the historic waterfront town of Chestertown on Maryland's Eastern Shore, sits approximately 90 minutes from Baltimore and Washington, D.C. Founded in 1782 with the support of George Washington, who served on its first Board of Visitors and Governors, it holds the distinction of being the first college chartered in the newly independent United States. The 120-acre campus features a mix of Georgian and modern architecture, with many buildings centered around a traditional campus green, and includes waterfront facilities on the Chester River that support the college's rowing program and marine biology studies. The liberal arts institution maintains a selective admission process and is particularly known for its writing program, environmental science department, and the Sophie Kerr Prize?the largest undergraduate literary award in the nation. Most students reside in on-campus housing for all four years, with first-year students living in dedicated freshman residence halls.
