The University of Maryland-Baltimore County (UMBC) is a public research institution located in Baltimore County, approximately 15 minutes from downtown Baltimore. Established in 1966, UMBC offers a suburban campus atmosphere set on 500 acres with a range of contemporary facilities distinctive for their Brutalist architecture. The university upholds a strong academic profile with selective admissions and is recognized for its emphasis on science and engineering programs, including its notable chess team.
