Indiana State University occupies a 435-acre campus in downtown Terre Haute, Indiana, located approximately 70 miles southwest of Indianapolis. Founded in 1865 as the Indiana State Normal School, the institution originally focused on teacher education before expanding into a comprehensive public university. The campus features a mix of historic and modern buildings, with limestone and brick architecture characteristic of Midwestern institutional design. ISU maintains strong academic programs in education, nursing, business, and criminology, while also housing the College of Technology, which offers specialized technical and aviation programs. Students typically reside in one of the university's residence halls during their first two years, and the institution competes in NCAA Division I athletics as the Sycamores, participating in the Missouri Valley Conference.
