The University of Hawaii at Manoa occupies 320 acres in the Manoa Valley of Honolulu, three miles from Waikiki Beach on the island of Oahu. Established in 1907 as a land-grant institution, the campus features a mix of modern and traditional Hawaiian architecture amid a tropical landscape of native flora. The university serves as the flagship campus of the University of Hawaii system and maintains selective admission standards, particularly for out-of-state applicants. UH Manoa is recognized for its programs in oceanography, astronomy, Pacific Islands and Asian studies, and tropical agriculture, with research facilities including the Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology and several astronomical observatories on Mauna Kea. Most first-year students reside in one of the six on-campus residence halls, and the university competes in NCAA Division I athletics as the Rainbow Warriors.
