The University of Montevallo, Alabama's only public liberal arts university, is situated in a small town 35 miles south of Birmingham. The 160-acre main campus features red-brick Georgian Revival and Colonial Revival architecture and is designated as a National Historic District. Founded in 1896 as the Alabama Girls' Industrial School, the institution became coeducational in 1956 and is now a selective public undergraduate university. While offering comprehensive liberal arts programs, Montevallo is particularly known for its College of Fine Arts, education programs, and communication studies department.
