Alabama State University (ASU) is a public historically Black university located in Montgomery, Alabama's capital city, approximately 90 miles south of Birmingham. Founded in 1867 as the Lincoln Normal School in Marion, Alabama, the institution relocated to its current Montgomery location in 1887 and has evolved from its origins as a teachers' college into a comprehensive university. The 172-acre urban campus features a mix of historic and modern buildings, including the Levi Watkins Learning Center and the Life Science Building. ASU offers undergraduate and graduate programs across five academic colleges, with particular strengths in education, business, and health sciences.
