West Liberty University sits atop a hilltop campus in West Liberty, West Virginia, located 11 miles northeast of Wheeling near the Pennsylvania and Ohio borders. Established in 1837 as West Liberty Academy, it is the oldest institution of higher education in West Virginia and evolved from a teacher's college to gain university status in 2009. The 290-acre rural campus features a mix of historic and modern buildings, with all freshman required to live in one of the six residence halls. The university maintains moderate admission standards and is known for its dental hygiene, music education, and biology programs, while also housing the West Liberty University Zoo Science program, one of only two such programs in the eastern United States. As a member of NCAA Division II, West Liberty competes as the Hilltoppers, with its men's basketball program regularly ranking among the top teams in its conference.
