Sweet Briar College, located in the foothills of Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountains approximately 12 miles north of Lynchburg, is a private women's liberal arts institution situated on a 3,250-acre campus known for its Georgian Revival architecture. Founded in 1901 as a women's college on the former Sweet Briar plantation, the institution has maintained its commitment to women's education despite facing temporary closure in 2015. The college is recognized for its engineering science, equestrian, and environmental science programs, with the engineering program being one of only two ABET-accredited programs at a women's college in the United States. Sweet Briar operates with a residential campus model where students are required to live on campus all four years, and the college maintains an extensive riding facility with indoor and outdoor arenas as part of its nationally competitive equestrian program.
