Overview

Mountain Empire Community College (MECC), established in 1972, is a two-year public institution located in Big Stone Gap, Virginia, set against the backdrop of the Appalachian Mountains' scenic landscape. The campus is characterized by modern facilities that blend with the natural environment, creating a tranquil academic atmosphere. With its close proximity to the city of Kingsport, Tennessee, the college offers students both rural charm and access to urban amenities. MECC is known for academics that focus on trades and certification programs, notably with strengths in health sciences, business, and technology. The college provides comprehensive courses designed for transfer to a four-year university, as well as associate degrees and certificate programs aimed at immediate employment. Mountain Empire Community College has an open admission policy which permits enrollment by any high school graduate or GED holding student.  822 students are enrolled on a full time basis, and 1,106 attend part time. In-state tuition for 2022/2023, excluding room and board, is $4,620 plus fees of $105.
