Located in the rural southwestern corner of Vermont, Bennington College occupies a former colonial-era farm estate spanning 440 acres of rolling countryside near the Green Mountains. The campus combines modernist architecture with converted 18th-century farm buildings, including the iconic Barn building that serves as the campus center. Founded in 1932 as a women's college and becoming coeducational in 1969, Bennington is known for its progressive approach to liberal arts education through its student-designed "Plan Process" curriculum, with particular strengths in visual and performing arts, literature, and environmental studies. The college operates on a unique academic calendar that includes an annual winter work term called Field Work Term, during which students pursue internships or independent projects off campus. All students live in residential houses throughout their enrollment, participating in a house-based governance system that is central to campus life.
