The University of Texas at Brownsville operated as a public institution in Brownsville, Texas, near the U.S.-Mexico border, until its 2015 consolidation with the University of Texas-Pan American to form the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV). Located in the southernmost part of Texas, the former UTB campus now serves as UTRGV's Brownsville location, situated approximately 275 miles south of San Antonio. The campus features a mix of modern and Spanish colonial architecture, including the historic Fort Brown buildings which date back to the Mexican-American War. Prior to the merger, UTB was known for its programs in education, business administration, and biological sciences, with a particular emphasis on bilingual studies and border region research. The institution historically served a predominantly Hispanic student population and maintained strong connections with neighboring Mexican institutions through cross-border academic partnerships.
