The University of South Dakota (USD), located in Vermillion, South Dakota, stands as the state's oldest public university, having been founded in 1862. Approximately 60 miles from Sioux Falls, USD provides students with a blend of rural and small-town atmosphere on its 274-acre campus, known for its dominant architectural style?the Richardsonian Romanesque, notably seen in the I.D. Weeks Library and the Old Main building. USD offers a comprehensive range of undergraduate and graduate programs with notable emphasis on health sciences, business, and law, housing the state's only medical school and law school. The academic environment is moderately selective, aiming to meet a broad range of educational needs while maintaining a commitment to quality. On-campus living is available through multiple residence halls and apartment complexes, fostering a residential academic community. While USD is not primarily recognized for its athletic achievements, it competes in NCAA Division I athletics as the South Dakota Coyotes.
