Lander University is a public institution located in Greenwood, South Carolina, approximately 60 miles west of Columbia and 50 miles south of Greenville. The 128-acre campus combines modern academic facilities with traditional brick architecture, centered around a landscaped plaza. Founded in 1872 as a women's college by Methodist minister Samuel Lander, the institution became a state-supported college in 1973. Lander is recognized for its nursing, business, and education programs, while also maintaining strong offerings in visual arts and exercise science. The university requires freshmen to live on campus in one of its six residence halls, and competes in NCAA Division II athletics as the Bearcats, participating in the Peach Belt Conference.
